Shopping Smart this Florida Tax-Free Weekend
The Florida Tax-Free Holiday occurs each year, and is promoted as a way of helping families prepare for the start of a new school year. Whether you're getting ready to purchase school supplies, electronics, or uniforms, Tax-Free Weekend is an exciting time to stock up on back-to-school essentials.
During the Tax-Free holiday, the state of Florida mandates that all items listed below are sold without sales tax, saving you around 7% in taxes.
According to the Florida Department of revenue, tax-free items include:
- Clothing, footwear, and certain accessories selling for less than $60 per item
- Certain school supplies selling for $15 or less per item
- Personal computers and certain computer-related accessories, selling for $750 or less per item, when purchased for noncommercial home or personal use
This list covers just about everything your student needs to start the year off right. Don't forget that backpacks, socks, and other accessory items are also exempt from sales tax.
One thing to keep in mind as you're shopping this weekend- expect crowds. With most Florida schools starting back between August 9th and 14th, several families will participate in tax-free shopping. For those who prefer to avoid crowded environments, it's best to start your shopping trip as early in the day as possible.
